The
Justice Brandeis Westchester Law Society is an association of
attorneys who are interested in maintaining ties with the Jewish
people. The Society was created to provide a social vehicle to
network, encourage civility and build camaraderie among attorneys
while celebrating their Jewish heritage and Jewish values in the
law. The Society's members seek to combine aspects of their lives
unique to being both attorneys and Jews. The Society, in furtherance
of these purposes, shall serve as a forum for the advocation and
education of issues and topics of mutual interest and concern

President's
Message July 2008
(click
here for previous
message)
Although
the summer is upon us, our Executive Committee continues to
work hard meeting monthly, planning future events and we remain
committed to our vibrant growing organization. We are pleased
to report that as of June 25 we now have 145 paid members. Just
in the last few weeks we have accomplished the following:
1. June 9, 2008 Shavuot Discussion of "Jewish Issues and
the Law "- presented by Barry Slotnick, Esq (our newest
member) and Rabbi Velvel Buttman. The event was attended by
about 35 members at the Law Offices of DelBello Weingarten and
all agreed it was a lively, fascinating and profound discussion.
We thank Rita Gilbert for providing the food and Judge Lefkowitz
for hosting the event.
2. We have received our printed letterhead/envelopes and as
our first mail project we forwarded to every local, superior,
Federal judge in the 9th Judicial District a letter introducing
ourselves and advising the dates of all major Jewish Holidays
in 2008 and 2009 for their records. This was done by unanimous
vote of our Executive Committee to advise the judiciary so that
they all understand when and why observant Jewish litigants,
jurors or attorneys may not attend scheduled court proceedings.
The letter was also forwarded to all Presidents of Bar Associations
in the 9th Judicial so that CLE classes or other events are
not scheduled on those dates.
3. A Lawyers Shabbat is being planned on or about Sept 19 which
shall be hosted by our organization. Hon Barry Warhit is in
the process of making such arrangements and once finalized we
hope many of you and spouses shall attend. More information
to follow.
4. Israel Trip - Hon Larry Ecker is chairing a committee to
explore a Brandeis trip to Israel summer of 2009 or Winter of
2009/2010. We shall limit attendees to no more than 50 and intend
to visit Jerusalem, Massada, Haifa, Kibbutz Ein Hashofet (named
after Brandeis) and other locations in the North. More information
to follow as costs become clearer.
5. Films and Speakers - I have been in contact with the Jacob
Burns Film Center and we are hoping to present a film in the
Westchester County Courthouse regarding the Holocaust and one
at the Jacob Burns to be presented by relevant speakers on the
subject. We are reviewing films and expect to host these events
in November 2008 and Holocaust Day 2009.
6. Our Committe is seriously discussing a date for our first
Gala event in late 2008 or Spring 2009. It is our intention
to present the First Judge Brandeis Westchester Lifetime Achievement
Award at that event. Please make your recommendations for such
recipient to a Board member.
We wish you a very happy and relaxing summer and will be in
contact with you thru email and this website throught the summer.
Shalom,
Jeff Cohen
